That’s surprising they share all the same circuitry, thanks for clarifying that. Maybe I will make my own USB break-in stick. The Stockfisch would be interesting for five minutes but not sure it would offer any advantage for break-in.
Please make me a USB break-in-stick also and I’ll give you a couple of quid.
FYI. To check my PST can handle different type of music files, and to save some money, I use these two free download on USB.
- "The MA Recordings Audiophiliac HiRez Music Sampler 2020” https://www.marecordings.com
- Bluecoast Sampler - Test Your System with Free Downloads | Blue Coast Music.
Well, I’ve to admit that I use these not for burn-in. Since I was beta tester, I used these to check file type playback. I was pretty much for sure my PST will be eventually burn-in with all beta testing I did.
Note that, I am not sure if during the burn-in with playing each track of different type of sample rate/freq will kill the PST or not, so be aware.
Excellent! Thank You! I have quite a few of the MA CDs so it will be good to compare with HiRez versions. Never thought to go to his website for free stuff. Todd from MA has lots of unusual music and it’s recorded wonderfully. I do have some Blue Coast free samples, mostly DSD 64 and HiRez PCM. I haven’t been excited by the music itself, very well recorded, but doesn’t inspire.
FYI. The blinking logo light on PST, you mentioned in previous post, according to PSA, it is “fatal software error”. Not un-common on my PST. Usually, logo blinking, all ctrl and LCD display freeze, but the player will continue to play. I waited to the end and Main power cycle the unit. So far with FW2.4.4, no problem on my PST. For me, one thing for sure, each FW update stabilizes my PST.
Yeah, it is pretty interesting. The signal from the stick still gets piped through the drive.
Hi James,
Any idea why my PST has never been able to update via the over the air feature? Its connected to WiFi, but every time I try to update via this feature, my only option is to exit.
I had the same problem. Finally, I gave up and just downloaded the update directly and installed it using a USB thumb drive.
James, I was using a USB on repeat to continue break-in and after about a day I got the slowly blinking light again. According to Terrence this is a fatal software error. Assuming that is correct, not sure if that means a problem with the firmware or a problem in my hardware. Perhaps the clock drifting causes it?
Not through the mechanical disc spinnig part only the electronics.
I’m not certain. It seems like continuous playback on the PST through USB starts to freeze after a day. This is still something Barry is wrestling with software wise.
Thanks James! Not surprising, but in reality, how often is continuous repeat done other than for break-in? I suppose you could load a large USB and just let it play away for several hours then let it keep repeating in say, a long party or a store environment. Personally, I don’t like listening to the same thing over and over. I would go crazy on the proverbial desert island … For the time being I will just play it for a day then stop and restart again.
That was precisely my issue with the PST I had in hand. It comes down t if you are willing to accept it with this “issue”. Most don’t play the unit continuously, but it may be a flag for other issues yet to manifest themselves. What they are I have no idea. Part of the break in or run in process is to ensure the unit is working properly, and that the circuits and mechanicals have “relaxed”.
Strangely enough, I used files on a USB drive to break my PST in this was 2 firmware releases ago and never had an issue. My PST has always functioned properly. It ran continuously 24 hours a day for days.
When I first acquired the PST last year, I found the USB with a smaller storage (32gb or less) worked, any USB with larger storage would have problem playing. Using USB to burn in is a good way to go.
Are you getting your PST repaired or replaced? For out of the box problems, they do usually offer a replacement unit. I had that opportunity but held off waiting for the firmware update. With a new problem surfacing not sure if I made the right decision. One other thing, what’s happening with your DS? I know it needed repair, but any idea what failed?
32gb didn’t work for me, found an old 2 gb and worked fine…I followed the instructions and it took 3 identical tries, then finally new firmware 2.4.4 installed…
PST can only take USB formatted to FAT32. Those 4GB and up might be formatted to extFAT. These won’t work. This applies to both FW update and USB playback.
For USB play back, I have tested 64GB USB from Kingston and Sandisk. See this post.
first listen since installing yesterday, everything working fine, and if I hadn’t been told it shouldn’t sound better, I might be thinking it does, or maybe just a little louder…actually Opposite of Placebo effect…
If you hear something that there is no possible reason to cause the change than it is a placebo effect. Eg, changing the wipers on your car will not make the car go faster!
